HOMANWX WEATHER SAFETY GUIDE
Understand the Risks
Learn what severe-weather outlooks mean, why every risk matters, and what to do when storms threaten.
IMPORTANTAn outlook is not a warning. HomanWX is an independent forecasting project, not an official NWS/SPC product. Always check weather.gov for official watches and warnings.
A low risk is not zero risk
Even one isolated severe storm can cause serious injury or damage. A lower category generally describes the expected coverage and intensity of severe weather across a region—not how dangerous a particular storm will be at your location.
01 / CATEGORICAL OUTLOOK
What do the five severe-weather risk levels mean?
TSTM indicates general thunderstorms and is not one of the five numbered severe-risk categories. These are broad outlook categories, not tornado intensity ratings.
02 / INDIVIDUAL HAZARDS
Understanding hazard probabilities
03 / MAP SYMBOLS
What does significant-severe hatching mean?
Diagonal hatching identifies a specifically designated area where significant severe weather is forecast. It does not mean every location in that area will experience a significant event.
For SPC-style outlooks, significant thresholds are generally EF2+ tornadoes, hail at least 2 inches, or thunderstorm wind gusts at least 75 mph, depending on the hazard. The exact hatching convention and probability threshold depend on the outlook product.
HomanWX hatching is forecaster-designated. Always interpret it alongside the forecast discussion and official SPC guidance.
04 / TAKE ACTION
Outlook vs. watch vs. warning
Outlook · Be aware
Severe weather may develop during the forecast period. Review your plan, charge devices, and follow updates.
Watch · Be ready
Conditions favor severe weather. Know your safe place and be prepared to act quickly if a warning is issued.
Warning · Take action
Dangerous weather is occurring or imminent. Follow the warning instructions immediately. For a tornado warning, move to a basement or small interior room on the lowest floor, away from windows.
05 / PREPAREDNESS
Simple severe-weather safety checklist
Checklist selections are temporary and are not saved. For official forecast products and preparedness guidance, visit SPC, NWS Weather Safety, and Ready.gov.
